Antonio McAfee (b. Stuttgart, Germany) is an interdisciplinary visual artist raised and based in Baltimore, MD, working in photography, drawing, video, and collage. The majority of his imagery is focused on remaking studio portraits from A Small Nation of People, an exhibition organized by W.E.B. Du Bois and Thomas Calloway for the 1900 World Expo in Paris. Antonio works with various portraits as interpretations of religious figures, death, new beginnings, and the process of disappearing, fading, growing into the part of the atmosphere, guided by the questions: What would these studio portraits be in the present and the future? What are new ways to depict these individuals while sustaining the power of the photographs? He received his BFA in Fine Art Photography from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. He received a Post-Graduate Diploma in Art in Arts and Culture Management from the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa). Recent exhibition venues include University of Maryland, College Park's Stamp Gallery, George Washington University's Gallery 102 (Washington, DC), and Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC).
